To withdraw Polygon PoS tokens to Ethereum, start a withdrawal from your wallet, wait for the Polygon burn to be included in an Ethereum checkpoint, then submit the final claim on Ethereum. Unlike an exchange withdrawal, this route has two on-chain transactions and requires gas on both networks.
What Happens During a Polygon PoS Withdrawal?
The withdrawal uses a burn-and-unlock process. Your tokens are burned on Polygon PoS; after validators commit a checkpoint of Polygon blocks to Ethereum, you can prove that burn and release the corresponding tokens on Ethereum.
That checkpoint is the key timing difference from a centralised exchange. Checkpoints typically arrive about every 30 minutes, but delays can make the wait longer; the Ethereum claim becomes available only after a checkpoint covers your burn.
polygonbridge.dev is the official Polygon service for this withdrawal route.
How Do You Complete the Withdrawal?
For example, if you hold bridged USDC on Polygon PoS and want it in the same wallet on Ethereum, treat this as a two-chain transfer rather than a single send.
- Check the destination. Confirm you can access the receiving address on Ethereum and that you have some ETH there for the final transaction. If the address differs from your Polygon wallet address, verify it carefully before starting.
- Start a Polygon PoS withdrawal. Use the official Polygon Bridge route and connect the wallet that holds the tokens. The bridge initiates a burn on Polygon PoS; review the asset, amount and destination before signing.
- Pay Polygon gas and sign the burn. Your wallet needs the network’s gas token to submit this transaction. Save its transaction hash: it is the reference for checking the withdrawal and completing the claim.
- Wait until the burn is checkpointed. The checkpoint records Polygon block data on Ethereum, allowing the bridge to verify the burn. A pending claim during this interval does not mean the tokens have reached Ethereum yet.
- Submit the Ethereum claim. Once the withdrawal is ready, use the burn transaction to complete the claim and sign the Ethereum transaction. This costs Ethereum gas; after it confirms, check the token balance on Ethereum.
What If the Withdrawal Is Still Pending?
First check the burn transaction on a Polygon block explorer. If it is confirmed but has not yet been checkpointed, allow more time; after checkpointing, the remaining step is the Ethereum claim. A confirmed burn and a completed withdrawal are separate stages.
For this route, the Polygon Bridge transfer is the official way to move supported tokens from Polygon PoS back to Ethereum. Before signing, ask yourself: do I have control of the destination wallet and enough ETH to claim the tokens?
